Image: Studio and Location Photography

Photographs are most effective when they combine geometry and proportion of composition with human context and emotional meaning. My phototgraphic idols are the masters of this, and include Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Nan Goldin, Lee Friedlander, Galen Rowell and many more.

I use Canon (full-frame) and Panasonic (micro four-thirds) cameras and lenses, as well as a variety of on- and off-camera flashes and studio lights. My compact, portable speedlight setup will handle most small to medium-sized subjects.

Product photography

Interesting, clean, accurate shots are essential for e-commerce. I have been doing product shots for several years, with an eye to producing communicative and compelling images, and have experience dealing with tricky exposure problems such as transparent and reflective items. Check out my Objects gallery for varied approaches to photographs of many kinds of things.

Nature photography

There is no substitute for the glory of outdoors settings or the drama of natural light. I am an avid backwoods traveller, and an equally avid photographer of the natural world. My Landscape gallery shows some of the work I have done with vistas large and small, and my Flora and Fauna galleries collect shots of various creatures and plants. See also the thematic Winter and Prairie galleries for more focused examples.

Editorial photography

I love the expressiveness of spontaneous street photography, and seek that energy when photographing all sorts of settings and subjects. One of the challenges I enjoy is capturing the social contexts and human meaning in any given subject. My People and Urban galleries reflect this attention to symbolic as well as geometric composition. Farming presents a more topical collection of images.
